St. Petersburg Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. is a not-for-profit neighborhood revitalization and community housing development organization (CHDO) that was incorporated in 1980. In 1985, the agency was designated a member of the national NeighborWorks network by the Congressionally-chartered NeighborWorks America (formerly the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation). As a NeighborWorks organization, SPNHS is dedicated to building partnerships with individual families, neighborhood leaders, and others who care about and invest in our community.

 

Mission

Our mission is to improve the quality of lives in our community, develop affordable housing, promote home ownership, improve safe neighborhoods, and stimulate economic reinvestment.

Goals

  • Heighten our visibility and credibility to a level where SPNHS is widely recognized as a reliable community leader and a catalyst for change.
  • Maintain and enhance our homebuyer and homeowner assistance programs.
  • Develop and maintain quality owner-occupied and rental housing.
  • Educate our primary and secondary customers regarding the value of Financial Fitness training and Home Management and Maintenance education to low- and moderate-income families in their pursuit of self-sufficiency and wealth.
  • Develop diverse and sustainable revenue streams sufficient to maintain our financial health and viability.
  • Recruit, train, and retain an expert workforce.

 

In the last fiscal year...

  • Graduated 238 customers/students from our Homebuyer Education classes
  • Graduated 103 customers/students from our financial fitness classes
  • Helped 79 households (families and single individuals) purchase homes
  • Helped four (4) homeowners refinance their mortgages
  • Helped four (4) homeowners get reverse mortgages
  • Developed four (4) new houses
  • Participated with home improvement guru Bob Vila in the production of a professional DVD documentary that is being distributed nationwide
  • Participated with former National Football League Player of the Year Warrick Dunn and his foundation in a "Homes for the Holidays" presentation in the Bartlett Park neighborhood
  • Co-hosted a magical Workforce Housing Social event along with the owners of the Bradshaw Mansion and City Council member Leslie Curran to raise awareness, friends and funds
  • Organized The Financial Services Roundtable Community Build Day in Childs Park that brought together approx. 175 volunteers and participants including former Congressman and former Mayor of Dallas Steve Bartlett (current Financial Services Roundtable President & CEO), Tom James of Raymond James Financial Services (Financial Services Roundtable Chairman), Mayor Rick Baker, all three deputy mayors, City Council members, neighborhood and nonprofit leaders, lots of children and parents, etc.
  • Hosted an informative and enjoyable Partners Luncheon at historic Sunken Gardens with Deputy Mayor Dr. Goliath Davis as guest speaker
  • Contributed to the production and statewide distribution of thousands of Community Housing Resource Guides under the auspices of the Florida League of Cities
  • Hosted an impressive annual meeting and luncheon at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club addressed by City Council member and former Florida League of Cities President Rene Flowers.  The event was attended by past St. Pete NHS Board members such as City Council member Herb Polson (charter Board member), Community Foundation of Tampa Bay President & CEO and former Mayor of St. Petersburg Dave Fischer, former Deputy Mayor Mike Dove and Attorney Howard Ross.  Congratulatory letters were presented from the offices of U.S. Senator Mel Martinez, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and U. S. Representative Kathy Castor.

 

Accomplishments

  • Helped nearly 500 families become homeowners since 1999
  • 2004 HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) Achievement Award Winner
  • Provided homebuyer counseling/education services to over 1,100 families since 2000
  • Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) 2002 “Money Smart“ Financial Fitness Training Model Project. More than 1,000 Financial Fitness program graduates; 35% have already purchased homes.
  • Member of the NeighborWorks® Campaign for Home Ownership. The largest national initiative of its kind, this campaign unites the efforts of banks, insurance companies, secondary markets, government, the real-estate community and others, all working to bring more families of modest means into homeownership.
  • Annually collaborates with the Warrick Dunn “Homes for the Holidays” program, an initiative that helps single mothers become first-time homeowners.
  • 1998 St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce “Small Business of the Year “award winner
