Community Building and Organizing
SPNHS is a non-profit neighborhood revitalization and community housing development organization (CHDO) formed in 1980. It was established to stimulate reinvestment in blighted neighborhoods through a working partnership of residents, government, the business community, lending institutions, and several national partners. SPNHS relies on research, uses market studies, conducts focus groups, initiates model block projects, and promotes clean-up campaigns to collect data, fashion proven strategies, identify “best practices,” foster pride, and build active involvement. SPNHS collaborates with various agencies and organizations to achieve strategic crime prevention, educational, cultural, and economic development goals related to its mission.
The result of the agency’s revitalization efforts are measurable by the changes that have occurred or are in progress in targeted neighborhoods, such as Old Southeast, Roser Park, and Bartlett Park in St. Petersburg. Old Southeast and Roser Park were early projects in the agency’s history, while revitalization efforts in Bartlett Park have been ongoing for 15 years. Upcoming neighborhood revitalization activities will focus on the Childs Park and Campbell Park neighborhoods of south St. Petersburg.
